When you are speaking to a number of nursing homes there are questions that might guide you to narrowing your selection.  These include:

Size - A smaller home may be more personal, but  a larger one may have more activities.  Ask about the types and frequency of activities and services.

Visitation - Inquire if the facility has unrestricted visiting hours.

Finances - Ask if the facility accepts both Medicare and Medicaid.  In the case of private pay, determine what the rate is and what services you will be required to pay for.

Reserving Bed - Ask if they will hold a bed if you need to be temporarily transferred to a hospital and what it will cost for a bed hold.

Family Council - Ask the facility if they have a family council and request the president's name and phone number.

Do not hesitate to contact your local ombudsman to verify the nursing home's responses or to seek answers to any other questions you might have.
